Glossary

Browser
Short for Web Browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages.
    Examples:
  1. Mozilla FIrefox
  2. Internet Explorer
  3. Netscape Navigator
  4. Safari

Domain Name
The unique name that identifies a web site. Domain names have to be registered to be valid and usable on the Internet.
    Examples:
  1. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular web pages. In the URL http://www.leslietanedesign.com/index.php, the domain name is leslietanedesign.com.
  2. The name that is at the right of the @ sign in an Internet address is the domain name. In the email address example@leslietanedesign.com, leslietanedesign.com is the domain name.

Internet
The vast collection of inter-connected networks across the world that use a common set of communications protocols.

ISP
Internet Service Provider. A company that provides an Internet connection.
    Examples:
  1. Comcast
  2. Charter

Link
Short for Hypertext Link, a link is a graphic, line of text, or both on a web page that connects to another page on the same web site or to one on a web server located anywhere in the world. Links are "clicked on" to go to the Web page they specify.

Registrar
A company specialized in the registering of domain names with the InterNIC.
    Examples:
  1. Hostway.com
  2. GoDaddy.com

Web Host
Provides Internet users with online systems for storing web sites. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center.
    Example:
  1. BlueHost.com

Web Page
A single document or file on the World Wide Web, identified by a unique URL. Please note: as long as a web page is a single file and can be found at a unique URL, a single web page can be many pages when printed. The printed length is irrelevant.
    Example: In the URL http://www.leslietanedesign.com/clients.php, the web page is clients.php

Web Server (see also Web Host)
A Web Server is a computer on the World Wide Web (connected to the Internet Backbone) that stores web pages and other information (such as images, sound, and video files, etc.) that can be retrieved via a Web browser.
    Example:
  1. BlueHost.com

Web Site
A collection of web pages and other information (such as images, sound, and video files, etc.) that share a domain name. A web site is stored on a computer (a "server") that can be accessed via the Internet.

World Wide Web
Often referred to as WWW or the Web, this usually refers to information available on the Internet that can be easily accessed with a browser. Not all servers on the Internet are part of the World Wide Web.

URL
An acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator," this is the address of a resource on the Internet. World Wide Web URLs begin with http://. The following example illustrates the difference between a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and a domain name:
     URL: http://www.example.com/
     Domain name: example.com
